I'm an Obama supporter, and I'm not pleased with this ad. The idea that we should try to hold a base in Iraq analogous to bases we hold in Germany, Korea and Japan is flatout dumb. We have about 20,000 troops in South Korea. When we have 20,000 troops in Iraq and no casualties - then we can talk about a base. But how many people would have died before we managed to reduce the number to that level? And what would we have gained if we could hold a base in Iraq without casualties? We have a base in Kuwait. That said, would the woman in the ad not allow her son to serve in the base in Kuwait? What about a base in Germany? The problem with the ad is that it leaves open the question of where the woman would allow her son to serve. It leaves open whether she is against service as a rule. This is why the Obama campaign would like to have 527s and 501s out of the media spotlight, have them do GOTV drives, etc. This ad sends a mixed message, and that is what Obama wants to avoid.
