Discrimination and Racism in Sports

I don't think discrimination or racism played any part in this at all. I think Chizik was hired for his coaching stint at Texas where he won a National Championship as an asst coach/co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach. Also because he worked with proven winners in Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy while at UCF. Iowa St. is not a football school by any means and Auburn wants a defensive-minded coach. Even though Turner Gill has a better record, he is known for coaching QB's. His history is not as extensive as Chiziks. Race does not have to be a factor in every decision.

This is unfortunate. I think college and professional sports have done more to unify Americans of all races than most anything else. Some may scoff at this observation because it seems profoundly simplistic and elementary. I think it's true nonetheless. My ninth grade football coach was a black man and he was strict, stern, self-disciplined, and fair. He had a spine of steel and I revere him to this day. I made innumerable Hispanic and black friends while playing sports. It was the second most rewarding gift I received from athletics -- the self-discipline was by far the first.
